24-04-09 VOSA check leads to taxi driver's disqualification
A Chichester taxi driver whose vehicle was inspected by VOSA at a taxi rank the day after his car failed an MOT test has been fined and banned from driving for two months.
Mr Guy Abbott was prosecuted by VOSA for a defective braking and steering system after his vehicle was checked at Chichester railway station taxi rank on 10 December 2008. The inspection was carried out as part of a joint operation between VOSA and Chichester District Council.
Twenty four hours earlier he had taken his taxi for an MOT test but despite failing the examination he continued to drive the vehicle.
Graham East, Senior Vehicle Examiner said:
“This could have been an accident waiting to happen and demonstrates the blatant disregard this man had for potential customers. This highlights VOSA’s determination to stop drivers who put others at risk by flouting the law and compromising road safety.”
Mr Abbott was found guilty of using a vehicle in a dangerous condition at Chichester Magistrates Court on 22 April. As well as being banned from driving he was also fined £80 and ordered to pay £200 costs.
