16-08-05 Possible Delay
It is very unlikely that type approval for any digital tachograph will happen/ be granted before May 2004 at the earliest. Therefore the existing deadline of August 2004 for the fitting of digital tachographs to all new vehicles is unrealistic. (References to this date will be amended as soon as the new implementation date is known). The Government recognises that it would be unreasonable to enforce an unachievable deadline and an announcement will be made in due course on how it proposes to handle the introduction of digital tachographs. Consistent action at EU level is essential in order to avoid confusion for vehicle manufacturers and international transport - hence the Government's on going dialogue with the Commission.
The Government have not yet received communication from the European Commission about any proposed Memorandum of Understanding or on a repositioning of the existing time scales".
