Important Guidelines for Completing the Application Form
General
Applications should be made using the Dept for Transport’s Shared Service Centre E-Recruitment system, which you will be directed to via the vacancy information on the civil service jobs advertising site. ( www.civilservice.gov.uk/jobs )
Please read the Person Specification carefully before starting your application. It describes the educational and professional attainments, experience, skills and competencies that are required for the role. These are the criteria against which your application will be assessed during the selection process.
The on-line application form requests that you provide information demonstrating how you meet certain essential criteria. It is important that you complete it as fully and accurately as possible as your progress to the next stage of the selection process will depend on the answers you give.
Qualifications
Applicants must be able to provide photocopies of their qualification certificates. It is only necessary to include qualifications relevant to the post you are applying for.
For technical posts such as Vehicle Inspectors and Examiners applicants must refer to the Technical Qualifications Guidelines. Applicants should state which modules they have passed /hold.
Competencies
Please refer to the competency framework relevant to the level or grade of post you are applying for. For some jobs, you will be required to provide on your application information relating to one or more of the competencies.
Candidates are advised that, should their application be successful, they are permitted the use of personal notes referencing their competencies during the interview section of the assessment.
The competency approach enables you to demonstrate that you have the behaviours needed for the job by describing situations and examples of what you have done. If you are unable to provide work related examples from either your current or past work experience, you can use experiences from other areas of your life, for example:
- Your family or home life
- Your school or college work
- Your leisure activities or voluntary work
For further guidance on completing the competency sections on the application, please refer to separate document ‘Tips for writing competencies’.
