Type Approval Engineer

Location:  Bristol / Nuneaton
Grade: HPTO/Pay Band 4 – Salary range £26,780 - £35, 315 pa (dependent on skills and experience)

VCA is part of the UK Department for Transport. We work with automotive industry globally, certifying vehicles, their systems and components to environmental, safety and security standards agreed at European and UN ECE level. This is a specialist field and our Engineers are viewed as experts in their chosen subject areas. On-the-job training will be provided and therefore previous direct experience of Type Approval work is not an absolute requirement.

You will already have a good understanding of motor vehicle technology and a keen interest in the transportation industry. As a fully-trained VCA Type Approval Engineer, you will be liaising with manufacturers at home and overseas, carrying out or witnessing tests and vehicle inspections at manufacturers’ premises or laboratories in the UK and overseas. During your career with us, you will gain a significant and valuable knowledge of Type Approval legislation, Conformity of Production requirements and current and new vehicle design technology. You will need:

• Professional qualification in automotive or mechanical or electrical engineering – or several years experience in a vehicle testing/approval environment
• Ability to organise your own work and organise control projects
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and workloads
• Natural aptitude for team work
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Capability to thrive under flexible working conditions
• Ability to communicate effectively in a customer oriented environment
• Willingness to travel extensively in the UK and overseas, including staying overseas for periods up to 6 weeks, several times per year
• Valid licence for driving in the UK
