Background:
VCA is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport. It is a specialist technical Agency with a particular emphasis on automotive and related technologies. It is the UK EC/ECE Type Approval Authority and Technical Service for automotive approvals, an accredited management systems certification body, and the Enforcement Authority for various related non-automotive Directives. VCA operates globally in a largely competitive environment and has overseas offices in USA, Japan, China, India and Malaysia.
General Description:
The primary role of the Technical Support Engineer is to work closely with Type Approval engineers involved in the testing of vehicles and components. This will involve preparing of test vehicles, instrumentation, loading, installation of special equipment, monitoring tests and testing of components. (Training will be given). Other responsibilities include calibration of equipment, support to engineers regarding use of equipment, procedures, etc.
All duties will need to be done in a timely manner in accordance with set target dates and will include close liaison with clients to ensure that requirements are met and that vehicles and components are submitted in accordance to VCA’s requirements.
As the role will have a significant technical aspect, the candidate must be willing to learn and develop skills.
Main tasks:
• To prepare test vehicles and components for tests, completion of test reports and operation of test equipment as necessary.
• Main responsibility for calibration and maintenance of test equipment and of the calibration database.
• To conduct and monitor component and vehicle tests in cooperation with test engineer and completion of test reports as necessary.
• Day to day supervision of workshop and test equipment including, keeping facilities clean and tidy, Health and Safety, purchasing of workshop materials etc.
• Other duties may include development of test procedures in cooperation with test engineer, procurement of test equipment etc.
Competencies
Essential:
• Technical Qualification- City and Guilds part 1+2 in electrical, automotive or mechanical discipline.
• Experienced engineer who can demonstrate examples of unsupervised work.
• Experience of electrical wiring of various types of equipment.
• Computer literate.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure, prioritising where necessary.
• A team player who demonstrates initiative and a flexible attitude.
Desirable:
• Experience of testing environment Automotive or Electrical.
• Committed to working towards a recognised professional technical qualification.
• Welding, light fabrication, use of machine tools.
