WASTE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT DIRECTIVE (WEEE)

From the 1st July 2007, VCA became responsible for  Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation. The role is to ensure that retailers and distributors of electrical equipment play their part in helping UK household users to dispose of electrical / electronic items when they reach the end of their life.

VCA has extensive experience of enforcing legislative compliance and a Regional network of qualified officers are on hand to ensure that standards are met.

New amendments came into force on 1st January 2010 regarding distributor obligations in relation to the following regulations:

Regulation 33 (Information) - Distributors shall make information available in writing.

Regulation 34 (Record Keeping) - The previous Secretary of State format is now a recommended format rather than compulsory.

Free Retailers WEEE Toolkit - Meet your legal obligations and enhance business reputation.

A free toolkit of resources is now available to help retailers meet their regulatory obligations and demonstrate their commitment to environmental issues. It includes a range of in-store and on-line marketing material designed to be customised to suit your own business and branding needs.

The toolkit was developed by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), co-funded with the Department of Business Innovation and Skills, and endorsed by BIS and the VCA. It helps retailers to comply with the information requirements placed on them under Regulation 33 of the WEEE Regulations. But it also goes further, offering a low-cost opportunity to demonstrate to increasingly informed consumers your company's commitment to sustainability.

There are two toolkits available, the resources are identical but the messaging has been adapted to meet the needs of those retailers and distance sellers offering takeback of unwanted equipment and those who are members of the Distributor Take Back scheme.

The VCA encourages all retailers to take a look and consider they how can use it to ensure compliance and maximise wider business benefits.
