FareXChange Study Report

Introduction

The FareXChange project was undertaken in 2006 on behalf of the DfT to look at the possibility of creating a national standard for the electronic exchange of fares data for all modes of public transport service. Such a standard would be part of the family of British standards, alongside TransXChange, and NaPTAN and JourneyWeb.

Study Objectives

The objectives of the FareXChange scoping study were:

  • To validate if there is a need for a FareXChange standard;
  • To prepare a specification detailing what needs to be done to develop the FareXChange standard;
  • To collect useful background information for the development phase; and
  • To engage the key stakeholders in the process.

Stakeholders

The study engaged a broad range of stakeholders for fares data, from the bus, coach and rail sectors. These stakeholders included:

  • Public transport service representation groups;
  • Public transport service operators;
  • Local authorities and PTEs;
  • Public Transport Information service providers; and
  • Systems and ticketing equipment suppliers to the industry.

Deliverables

The FareXChange project produced a report, workshops and some  presentation seminars on its reports
