This website enables the user to search and download annual average daily flow (AADF) figures for each count point on the major road network.

AADF figures are produced for each junction to junction link on the major road network for every year. A description of how annual road traffic estimates are produced is available on the Traffic estimates web page.

Only a sample of points on the minor road network are counted each year. Data from these counts are used to produce estimates of traffic growth on minor roads and are available to download. However, data for minor road count points are not shown on the mapping tool.

Traffic data on major roads in each local authority and region are available to be downloaded from the Areas and Download web pages. Traffic figures are calculated by multiplying the AADF by the corresponding length of road and by the number of days in the year. So one vehicle travelling one mile each day for a year would equal 365 vehicle miles. Traffic figures are presented in thousand vehicle miles, so a local authority with a traffic volume of 20,000 vehicle miles in one year will be presented as 20.0.
