Supporting automotive manufacturing and the UK supply chain
The automotive industry is an important sector, directly employing 140,000 people in 3,100 businesses and accounting for nearly 6 per cent of manufacturing employment in the UK.
The shift to lower carbon vehicles creates growth opportunities for the automotive sector, supporting the rebalancing of the economy and securing high-tech jobs. The Government wants to ensure UK-based businesses are well positioned to seize the opportunities in both the early domestic market, and in the longer-term, to position the UK as a major player in the rapidly expanding global market.
OLEV works closely with industry and other government departments to develop and strengthen the capability of ultra low carbon vehicle manufacturing and its associated supply chain in the UK.
UK Automotive Council
The UK Automotive Council provides a forum for high-level discussions between the automotive industry and Government and to determine a long-term strategic framework for the sector’s development. OLEV participates in both the Technology and Supply Chain working groups which focus on low carbon technology road-mapping and strengthening the UK-based supply chain development.

Technology Strategy Board
Collaborative research and development programmes can contribute to the development of a stronger UK-based supply chain for ultra-low emission vehicles. One of the principal aims of the Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform (through which the Government’s programme of research and development for low carbon vehicle technologies is delivered) is to help the UK automotive sector benefit from the growing demand for low carbon vehicles.
