Department for Transport’s role in London 2012
The Department’s role is to work with the transport industry to ensure the smooth running of the UK’s transport system during the Games.
Transport legislation and security
While the Department’s role is not operational, we will be working with our partners to oversee and deliver transport plans that provide safe, secure and reliable transport.

Reducing Government travel during the Games
Across Whitehall, Government departments are making plans to positively change half of their commuting, business travel, deliveries and collections during the Games.
DfT will be leading the way.
We’re looking to positively change our travel by 50 per cent at Games time.
To make sure our plans are fit for purpose and to maximise our resilience, we ran a test week – Operation StepChange in early February. Departments across Whitehall will be taking part.

Olympic Delivery Authority
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is responsible for Games infrastructure. The ODA is also in charge of directly managed transport for spectators and the Olympic Route Network (ORN) and Paralympic Route Network (PRN) outside of London.
London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is responsible for the staging of the Games including transporting the athletes, officials, media and marketing partners.
Government Olympic Executive
The Government Olympic Executive (GOE), part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, ensures Government delivers its leads Olympic objectives.
Transport for London
Transport for London (TfL) is leading on both public and road transport operations in London including the
- London Oympic Route Network and Paralympic Route Network
- road freight programme
- 2012 Games Travel Demand Management programme
TfL is also responsible for the delivery and management of the Transport Co-ordination Centre which co-ordinate communication between all transport operators/authorities and 2012 Games partners during Games time.
