JOHN REYNOLDS ON THE SEASON AHEAD AND HIS FAVOURITE ROAD…
Just before THINK! Motorcycle Academy ambassador John Reynolds jetted off to Italy to the launch of a new road bike, we got his views on thecoming season, and his outlook on road and circuit racing…
So, John, you seem to have had plenty to do since you stopped racing in 2005?
“Yes, I'm pleased to say I’m extremely busy working for the THINK! campaign, Suzuki GB and with the Suzuki race teams at BSB. I seem to have as much to do every weekend as when I was racing, which is great!”
How did your role with THINK! come about?
“I’d been involved with road safety for the last six years or so, working locally for Nottingham Police, when I was approached by THINK!. I’ve since been on several rides with the Bike Safe team, which was a real eye-opener.”
It’s an obvious question, but do you miss racing?
“Yes, I do miss the racing but I feel fortunate to still be involved with BSB and still get to ride bikes in testing and at World Launches.”
How do you think this season is shaping up – there seems to be a lot of changes?
“I'm really looking forward to the new season: there have been many changes to the series – like the one-make tyre rule – which, I think, will make the racing closer and so much more exciting for riders and spectators. And there are loads of new riders again, so the series is really in great shape.”
Not many racers seem to have a road licence – why do you think that is?
“I'm not really sure because, personally, the first thing I did when I reached 16 was to apply for my licence and get a bike on the road. I guess many riders start riding very young and it’s then hard when you’re in a racing environment to find the time.”
Is there anything that helped you ride on the road that you learnt on the track?
“A healthy regard for safety – I know how it feels to crash and how far you slide!”
What’s the biggest difference between track and road?
“On the track you get from A to B as quickly as you can. But on the road you should get from A to B as safely and enjoyably as you can. It sounds common sense but you have to remind yourself of the difference every time you put your kit on.”
Do you have a favourite road?
“The road from Nottingham to Matlock in Derbyshire – full of corners and beautiful scenery, and there’s always a nice cup of coffee when you get there!”
We often see you ride with pillions on the track before a BSB race. Is that more stressful than fun?
“No stress – just fun! It’s a great feeling to give someone the opportunity to ride around a race track in front of a large crowd.”
Thanks for your time John, we look forward to seeing you at the THINK! Motorcycle Academy at BSB, talking and signing for the fans…
“Cheers, I’m really looking forward to it all too!”
