On paper the 2008 Bennetts British Superbike Championship has been an absolute cakewalk and a one man show at the hands of Shane Byrne and his awesome Airwaves Ducati 1098R. The Brands Hatch local has opened up a massive lead and looks set for a sure fire championship win, barring disaster.
However that isn’t the full story… no less than five other riders have taken race wins this year disproving the monopoly theory but what they have all lacked is his amazing level of consistency. At one end of the spectrum three young rookies have taken their maiden wins; Cal Crutchlow (HM Plant Honda), Leon Camier (Airwaves Ducati) and Tom Sykes (Rizla Suzuki) whilst series hardy perennial Michael Rutter (NW200 Ducati) took a deserved win at his home track Mallory Park after several ‘lean’ years.
Cal Crutchlow has pushed Byrne closest with several head-to-head victories but he has been prone to technical and rider faults! The biggest surprise of the season has possibly been that of Cal’s seasoned HM Plant Honda team-mate, Leon Haslam. Touted as a Championship favourite, Leon has only just logged his first win of the season as he has suffered all sorts of trials this season.
With all of this great action, the THINK! Motorcycle Academy is proud to have hosted many of these riders on the unit, giving up their time in busy race weekends to talk to the fans. We cant wait to see how the rest of the season continues!
