The Department aims to improve transport provision for disabled people - whether as pedestrians, public and special transport users, or motorists - while also improving accessibility in public places.

Accessibility and Equalities Unit

The Unit's aim is to make policies and provision for public transport users, pedestrians and motorists that are acceptable, accessible, available, affordable and safe, and to promote diversity in transport policy development.


Aviation and Shipping

Information for operators and disabled people on making air and sea travel accessible.


Disability Discrimination Act 2005

The Disability Discrimination Bill received Royal Assent on 7 April 2005 to become the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.


Blue Badge Scheme

Information about the blue badge scheme, which offers parking concessions to people with mobility difficulties or severe problems with vision.


Buses and Coaches

Information for vehicle manufacturers, operators and disabled people on making bus and coach travel accessible.

Assessment of accessibility standards for disabled people in land based public transport vehicles

A literature review was conducted to identify existing accessibility regulation relating to land-based public transport and gather any published evidence to indicate its effectiveness.
