On-line now: the first UK Logistics Careers Web site.

The logistics industry has successfully recruited its first employee via www.careersinlogistics.co.uk [external link]. Funded by the Department for Transport, Careers in Logistics is the UK's first logistics career focused web site.

The web site aims to increase recruitment in the industry, positively promote the image of logistics and improve on current recruitment campaigns by reducing timescales and cost.

Careers in Logistics provides employers the opportunity to advertise vacancies and search potential CVs whilst offering job seekers the opportunity to find jobs. It also supplies invaluable advice and information about careers, training and funding, and the logistics industry itself.

Transport Minister Charlotte Atkins said:

"People are the most valuable asset in any business and the logistics industry is no exception. Attracting good people into the industry at all levels is essential but companies do have difficulty recruiting staff.

Over the last six months, nine million people have searched the internet for jobs so it is vital that logistics, as the fifth largest industry in the UK economy, taps into this group of job seekers.

That is why I am pleased with the early success of Careers in Logistics. The web site provides an excellent source of information for people about the logistics industry and demonstrates the range of career paths available. I would urge the industry to continue to use the web site which is already helping to raise the industry's profile and draw attention to its many opportunities."

Developed by Methods Consulting, Skills for Logistics and Jobsite, the web site was launched on the 23rd August 2004. A range of the UK's leading logistics employers have already signed up to the service, including Wincanton, Exel, TNT, APL Logistics, Menzies Distribution, and the Freight Transport Association.

Edinburgh based Menzies Distribution Ltd can already testify to the success of Careers in Logistics. The company advertised the post of Day Supervisor on 14th September, the position was applied for on 15th September and fulfilled by 27th September.

"With over 3000 logistics personnel in our UK warehousing, packing and driving operations, Menzies is inevitably exposed to the issues of staff turnover at all levels, with consequent direct costs and additional time and service impacts in filling such posts.

We are delighted with our early experience of the fast and effective results achieved through the recently launched Careers in Logistics (CiL) web site, having already secured one permanent placement (a Day Supervisor), within less than two weeks from initial advertising of the role to employee commencement.

Currently the site stands alone in demonstrating the wide-ranging opportunities available to those interested in working in the logistics industry. We hope and believe that this placement will be the first of many successful pairings for Menzies," enthused David Morton, Strategic Development Director, Menzies Distribution Ltd.

Methods Consulting, Skills for Logistics and Jobsite will take over management and development of the website on behalf of the industry later this month.
