Project: Application of Existing Accessiblility Regulations to the Refurbishment of Rolling Stock

Reference: UG331B

Last update: 09/09/2003 15:44:21

The main objective of this project is to increase the understanding of the nature of existing rolling stock, and to produce the economic assessment of how this stock can be improved to meet disabled-access proposals.

There is a large fleet of railway coaches with a lengthy 'life expectancy', yet there is uncertainty about the practicality and costs involved in upgrading such stock (or parts of it) to meet the equivalent of current Disability Access Regulations for new public transport vehicles (door widths, conspicuous paint schemes, location of alarms and push-buttons. location and size of toilets for wheelchair travellers)
