Project: Safety of Elderly and Disabled People in Vehicles

Reference: UG55

Last update: 09/09/2003 16:14:19

The objective of this project is to support testing work, and standards generation, for wheelchair restraints, and safety systems for disabled car occupants.

This project was used to provide information to inform discussions at national and international level on the safety of elderly and disabled people in vehicles. A significant amount of test work on wheelchair and occupant restraints was carried out and this was fed into the development of international standards - ISO 7176: Part 19 for wheelchairs and ISO 10542 for wheelchair and occupant restraints. These standards are now being voted on and should be published shortly.

The project also gathered information on the dimensional characteristics of occupied wheelchairs, and this was used to inform policy on the appropriate requirements for accessibility regulations made under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. The dimensions used in rail and PSV accessibility regulations are based on the findings of this work.
