Project: Assessment of Route and Destination Displays on PSVs

Reference: UG267

Last update: 08/06/2005 11:19:06

The objective of this project is to assess appropriate requirements for Bus destination and Route number, plus any supplementary information on bus displays. Existing regs already mandate these, but there needs to be a review on display type, legibility and lighting of the display, to ensure conspicuity for poor-sighted people.

This follows from some work by Transport for London, which indicated that supplementary information on the bus displays must not detract from the basic requirement to show Route number and Destination. It is potentially possible that the 'supplementary' information will be capable of being displayed at bus stops in future (eg Countdown and its variants).

Summary of results

  1. The research identified key aspects connected with the clear provision of route and destination displays and these are reported fully in the final report. The research was also used to produce an information document providing guidance for bus service operators and system designers for improving their route and destination displays.
