Objectives

The project objectives are to:

* analyse available accident data in order to prioritise the injuries that should be investigated by the project;
* determine the mechanisms that lead to these injuries and the load levels at which they occur, so that safe limits can be interpolated;
* assess the ability of current dummy designs to measure the loadings that cause such injuries;
* where appropriate, propose improvements in dummy design that would allow better replication of human responses to impacts; and
* assess the improved designs of dummy and the advantages they offer.

Description

The overall purpose of this work is to drive the development of safer vehicles in order to reduce the number of injuries to car occupants and pedestrians that result from road traffic accidents. Improvements in vehicle safety can be driven by legislative crash safety requirements as well as consumer testing where the results of independent tests are made available to the general public. In these tests the crash test dummy is the primary assessment tool for determining occupant injury risk. Consequently it is very important that the dummy is able to behave in a human like (biofidelic) manner, and is able to measure the loads and accelerations that would cause injury to a human. This research will support the enhancement of biomechanical knowledge that is vital in the process of making advances in dummy development.
