Objectives

The development of crash test dummies that are able to measure injury forces and injury mechanisms associated with real-time accidents, to enable the international acceptance of test procedures and to understand better the distribution of injury tolerance.

Description

This project is the UK's contribution to the development and evaluation of new improved crash test dummies for world-wide use. It included an assessment of new designs of frontal impact dummy chest, arm and leg, and investigated ankle injuries, which can be difficult to repair and lead to long term impairment.

Summary of results

  1. A series of reports identifying key issues and developments toward the project objectives, namely identifying priorities for leg injury types, biofidelity performance of various dummy legs, FE model development for the face and lower leg and, child dummy development. Some initial work on the review of EuroSID was carried out with further work being transferred to the Review of Frontal and Side Impact Directives (Project S092E/VF).
