The DfT launched a traffic signs policy review in September 2008. Its objective is to develop a traffic sign system that will meet the changing needs of road users and provide effective tools for the better management of the road network, incorporating new technologies and minimising the impact on the environment.

The DfT considers that there are too many traffic signs and one of the key objectives of the traffic signs review is to minimise the impact of traffic signs on the streetscape. This project sets out how to audit traffic signs and remove those that are unnecessary.
