Project: Airport Environmental Operation - Sandpit

Reference: SRT 7/5/25

Last update: 29/10/2009 14:52:21

Objectives

Current research in aviation and the environment relates to air traffic management and aircraft emissions and fuel use. Little work is currently being done on airports. So, the research expected to result from the sandpit will compliment the existing research.
Aviation Environmental Division are interested in this work and will be the main DfT users of the result of the consequent EPSRC funded research.
The Sandpit is expected to identify a portfolio of research projects to be funded by EPSRC.

Description

To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts of transport. Evidence is needed on the environmental impact of current airport operations and possible methods for reducing these impacts.

Summary of results

  1. As a gap in our current research proposal the Research Councils' Energy Programme with the Department for Transport commissioned a 5-day sandpit in November 2008 to look at the research challenges around reducing the environmental impacts of airport operations (not the aeroplanes themselves).

Departmental Assessment Status: This project resulted in a programme of projects for Aviation Environment Division in the Department.
