Project: Low Cost Smart Card Investigation

Reference: S0444/V3

Last update: 23/12/2008 14:24:25

Objectives

This research will enable us assess the ability to use emerging low cost, shorter life smart media within the confines of the national standard - ITSO- and in a UK environment. It will include a trial of low cost media, conduct a robust analysis to address operational, commercial and technical aspects and will develop guidance for scheme developers and Local Authorities.

Description

The proposed research will build on the initial TCF study. It was not initiated earlier as a result of the requirement to build on existing ITSO smartcard schemes and the readiness of a scheme with back-office infrastructure compliant to the national standard. We are confident this will be in place in sufficient areas across England to enable this research to commence. The research will concentrate on the use of the new media by:
. the travelling public;
. the impact of the ticketing products on the target customer groups;
. the impact on the business case for the procurer; and
. how it interfaces with the existing ticketing product range offered.
It is assumed the base ITSO infrastructure will be in place allowing for the quick introduction of the new media.
