Project: ERGONOMIC TEST RIG FOR AIRCRAFT ON-BOARD WHEELCHAIR

Reference: R 168 & R171

Last update: 22/03/2007 15:06:07

Objectives

At present there is no standard for the functionality of a wheelchair for use on board commercial aircraft. The aircraft industry needs and wants such a specification, and it should be evidence based. This research is the next stage of a DPTAC project, carried out with the full support of the Mobility and Inclusion Unit and Aviation Directorate, to develop a specification for an accessible on-board wheelchair for commercial aircraft. The specification has been devised and approved by DPTAC. Stage 3 will ensure, as far as practicable, that the wheelchair specification takes into account the widest range of disabled passenger needs possible. This will be done by consulting disabled passengers to gain their input based upon a mobile test rig representing the features and dimensions set out in the on-board wheelchair specification.
