Project: A Framework Arrangement for Scientific and Technical Support

Reference: S0217/VC

Last update: 13/03/2008 15:12:48

Objectives

The specific objective of this research project is to provide a flexible support service to policy engineers and officials in VTS division.

It is not possible to describe the objectives more precisely given the range of issues and topics likely to be covered during the project lifetime. For example:

* drafting of research project specifications;
* tender appraisal/evaluation and project management;
* peer review of research or technical papers;
* analysis/advice on regulatory measures and type approval;
* providing scientific support for/at both National and International meetings;
* testing, evaluating and advising on vehicle safety and systems;
* evaluation and advice on advanced technology issues including telematic and intelligent highway systems;
* propulsion systems, ICE emissions testing and fuel quality assessment or analysis;
* vehicle/tyre noise testing and advice; and
* regulatory impact and competitiveness assessments.

It will also not be possible to provide a definitive statement about the use of the results given the broad range of subject areas. Each separate work item is likely to have a different final use, although they will all be directed at supporting, developing or implementing DfT policy.

Description

This project will deliver a variety of separate outputs ranging from reviews of technical papers, providing scientific support for policy officials at meetings and testing vehicles and systems. The timing of these outputs will be determined when requests are identified and costs and timetables agreed with the preferred contractor. This is aimed at complementing the division's work programme and is therefore likely to be related to much of the current VTS research portfolio. It will not directly duplicate any work being undertaken in specific projects.
