Objectives

The aim of this project is to discover whether number-plate cameras can be used to determine orgin to destination patterns.

Description

This study is investigating whether number-plate cameras can be used for determining accurate origin-destination patterns. At present there is insufficient experience of how accurate this method might be and which factors need to be taken into account when using cameras instead of traditional interview surveys. Using cameras is of interest for motorway journeys because it is not usually possible to get samples of motorway interview information other than by surveys at service areas.

Summary of results

  1. A draft advice note was prepared but does not fully consider the wisdom of using partial (fuzzy) matching of number plates.
