The UK has a higher performance standard on HGV sideguard strength than is provided in the European standard. This project will examine current sideguard designs with the aim of reviewing legislative requirements.

Summary of results

  1. The evidence gathered during this project clearly demonstrated that large vehicles not equipped with any form of sideguard or equivalent structure represents a greater hazard to unprotected road users than do similar vehicles equipped with such devices.
