Project: Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Procedures

Reference: S210D/VC

Last update: 03/12/2003 12:19:30

Objectives

The objectives of this project are to determine whether significant levels of electromagnetic fields are generated that could potentially affect electronic systems fitted to vehicles and to make recommendations for test procedures suitable to combat this.

Description

At present a relatively modest number of vehicles use electronic control systems, but in the next five to ten years electronics will be used extensively to control brakes, steering, supension and transmissions. All of these represent safety critical applications.

By their very nature electronic systems are sensitive to extraneous sources of energy. Protection needs to be built into devices and circuits to provide sufficient immunity to electromagnetic fields and, in order to reach the required level of performance, it is important that standards and test procedures for immunity must provide adequate safety margins.
