Transport Direct is the only website that offers free information for door-to-door travel for both public transport and car journeys around Britain. Our aim is to provide comprehensive, easy-to-use travel information to help plan your journeys effectively and efficiently.
Transport Direct is unique in that you can:
- Compare journeys for public transport options with Transport Direct’s route planner;
- Obtain a car route that takes into account predicted traffic levels at different times of the day so that you can make informed decisions about when to travel;
- Get an estimate of the cost of a car journey;
- Buy train and coach tickets from our affiliated retail sites without having to re-enter your details;
- Use PDAs and mobile phones using the latest browser technology (WAP2.0) over a GPRS or a 3G connection to find out departure and arrival times for railway stations throughout Britain and for some bus or coach stops;
- Obtain real-time information for both road and rail;
- You can find out the estimated CO2 emissions for your journey and then compare those emissions with those for alternative modes of Transport;
- Plan a complete day trip, taking into account your individual schedule; and
- Plan a cycle route

Figure 1 shows the home page of the Transport Direct Portal and illustrates some of the more recent enhancements designed to enable the user to find salient travel and transport information as quickly as possible:
- A mini door-to-door journey planner on the home page, with a simplified set of options;
- Live travel news immediately visible and accessible from the home page;
- A mini find a place service to quickly find details about locations;
- Details of the tips and tools available through the Transport Direct Portal, including the CO2-related services and information about the mobile and interactive television channels;
- Improved left-hand navigation (a common feature throughout the Transport Direct Portal) to all of the main Transport Direct Portal services;
- An information area on the right-hand side of the web page (a common feature throughout the Transport Direct Portal) to provide the user with pertinent and up-to-date travel and transport information.

Figure 2 illustrates the rich set of journey planning services that the Transport Direct Portal offers. The aim is to provide services that meet the differing needs of users at different times:
- A full door-to-door journey using transport modes as appropriate;
- All-day information about specific transport modes between two places;
- The cheapest way to travel by rail between two stations;
- Driving to and from car parks or park and ride services;
- Comparing train, coach and air services between major cities and transport hubs.
