
The Department for Transport's Accessibility and Equalities Unit (previously known as the Mobility and Inclusion Unit) was set up in 1980 to promote mobility and reduce exclusion by improving accessibility and personal mobility options. It does this by:

The Unit is based at Great Minster House in London.
AEU employs over 25 people and comprises seven branches each of which is responsible for a discrete area of the Unit's work. These are explained in more detail below. Contact details for each branch are available on the Where can I get more advice? section.
DPB develops and implements policies and provision for disabled people as pedestrians, public and special transport users and as motorists through:
SEPS is responsible for:

develops policy on the transport needs of different social groups and promotes diversity in transport policy development across the Department including implementation of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000;
implements the Department's Race Equality Scheme;
implements the Department's Gender Equality Scheme;
co-ordinates the Department's response to the Human Rights Act 1998;
co-ordinates the Women's Transport Network;
takes forward the voluntary and community sector strategy and action plan and works across Government on initiatives to support and build transport capacity within the sector; and
liaises with the voluntary and community sector working towards the agreed aims of the Compact between the Government and the sector.
