School travel

Promoting safe and healthy journeys to school which in turn, can also help to reduce the use of the car and impact of the 'school run'.

A school travel advisers toolkit has been jointly produce by DfT and DfES to help develop a strategic approach to school travel issues. It promotes the use of walking, cycling and public transport to reduce car dependency for journeys to school. Grants for walking buses

The purpose of the scheme is to provide support to schools that have made a commitment to reducing car use and increasing walking for journeys to school. The closing date for applications was 31 January 2007 and details of the successful schools were published on 26 March 2007.

Travelling to School project

In 2003, the Government launched the Travelling to School project, to enable as many children as possible to walk, cycle or use public transport to travel to school. 'Travelling to school: a good practice guide' describes what schools, local authorities and bus operators around England can do to promote walking, cycling and the use of public transport and 'Travelling to School: an action plan' sets out how the Government intends to help local authorities and schools do this.
