Bike Week 2007
Bike Week 2007 (16 - 24 June)
On Your Bike for Bike Week 2007!
Bike Week is the only UK annual 'celebration of cycling' and it is coming to a town near you!
Bike Week will take place during 16-24 June this year. More than 1,500 local cycling events and rides are expected to attract at least 250,000 participants, half of whom will be new or returning to cycling. Among many other activities, events and rides for cyclists of all abilities, Bike Week will include pre-Bike Week cycling skills training and 'Dr Bike' free cycle safety checks to help get 'more people cycling more often'.
This year Bike Week is promoting cycling as 'the' everyday sport. Many fun events will be aimed at novice or lapsed cyclists, including children and young families. Hundreds of Bike2Work rides are being organised by local authorities, NHS trusts, other employers and workplace bicycle user groups, helping to reduce the number of unnecessary daily car journeys by commuters.
Most Bike Week events are free to enter. Some will raise funds for charities, including Leukaemia Research. Organisers range from local authorities to cycling clubs, National Cycle Network volunteer rangers to campaigning groups.
To find out about Bike Week and Bike2Work events, please see http://www.bikeweek.org.uk (or phone 0845 612 0661), where all of the registered events and rides will be listed.
The first national Bike Week was held in 1923. Last year more than 1,700 events attracted 265,000 cyclists. Bike Week is organised for 19 organisations (see below), funded by UK governments (England, London, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) and sponsored by the cycle industry's Bike Hub.
