Public Attitudes towards climate change and the impact of transport
Introduction
This report summarises people's attitudes to the environment and climate change in relation to transport. A module of questions was first included in the Office for National Statistics' Omnibus Survey in May 2005 on behalf of the Department for Transport. The module, with some additions and refinements, was repeated in the NS Omnibus in August 2006. This 2006 module will be repeated in the future to monitor changes in attitudes over time.
The questions were designed to explore the following issues:
- levels of public concern about the environment and climate change;
- public knowledge about the causes and consequences of climate change;
- views on the potential for behavioural change to reduce the impacts of climate change;
- public understanding of the contribution of transport to climate change;
- levels of support for a range of policy options to reduce transport emissions and views on the respective responsibilities of individuals and government;
- the extent to which concern about climate change has the potential to influence travel behaviour.
This report was prepared by Alex Barton and Tracey Budd (Statistics Travel).
