Attitudes to climate change and the impact of transport

Introduction

This article summarises people's attitudes to the environment and climate change in relation to transport. Questions were asked in the Office for National Statistics' Omnibus Survey in May 2005 on behalf of the Department for Transport. The questions were designed to explore the following issues:

  • levels of public concern about the environment and climate change;
  • public understanding of the  contribution of transport to climate change;
  • levels of support for a range of poilicy options to reduce transport emissions and the respective responibilities of individuals and government;
  • the extent to which public concern about climate change has the potential to influence travel behaviour
