Introduction

This publication reports on the condition of public roads, footways, kerbs and verges in England and Wales. Results are derived from surveys of surface condition and structural condition which are collectively referred to as the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey (NRMCS).

Key results from the survey are shown in chapter 2.

The following images are examples of some of the main types of carriageway defects.

They do not necessarily illustrate the magnitude of defect typically found in the survey, but they do serve as useful pictorial examples of the different types of defects that inspectors are asked to record.
