The railways are a vital part of the country's transport infrastructure. In order to formulate and monitor policy a variety of statistics are collected and published. The Office of Rail Regulation have overall responsibility for rail statistics and produce the key industry statistics publication, National Rail Trends. There is a link to their website, and links to other sources of railways statistics, below.

This web page provides links to information on rail travel derived from the National Rail Travel Survey (NRTS). The National Rail Travel Survey is a survey of passenger trips on the national rail system in Great Britain. It was initiated by the Strategic Rail Authority and carried out by DfT to fill a gap in our knowledge about who uses the rail network, where, when and for what purposes.

Email: rail.stats@dft.gsi.gov.uk for more information about the survey. For information on other aspects of rail statistics, please contact the Office of Rail Regulation (see relatedĀ links).

NRTS main reports will be released on this website when they are available.
