Bus and light rail statistics Great Britain: Q4 2008
The Department has published National Statistics on the latest quarterly data on passenger satisfaction, bus reliability and bus and light rail patronage in Bus and Light Rail Statistics GB: Q4 2008, according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points, in seasonally-adjusted terms unless otherwise noted, are as follows.
- The index number for bus and light rail journeys in England in the Autumn quarter of 2008/09 was 122.2, down by 1.2 per cent from the previous quarter and 2.3 per cent higher than in the same quarter a year earlier.
- Bus and light rail patronage increased in all areas of England in the Autumn quarter of 2008/09 compared to a year earlier but decreased in Scotland and Wales.
- In Autumn 2008, the average score for overall satisfaction given by passengers for the bus journey just completed in England was 83 out of 100, an increase of one point on the previous quarter’s rating. Satisfaction with reliability in England rose by one point from the Summer quarter to 72.
- Concessionary fares reimbursement to bus operators increased to £1,039 million in Great Britain in 2007/08, up 6 per cent in real terms since 2006/07. The largest increases were seen in English non-metropolitan areas and in Wales. Public Transport Support for buses rose by 3 per cent in real terms to 1,115 million in 2007/08, with London experiencing the largest increase.
- Around 8.2 million Penalty Charge Notices were issued by Local Authorities in England and Wales in 2007, up from 8.0 million in 2006. The proportion of Penalty Charge Notices which were paid increased from 50 per cent in 2000 to 67 per cent in 2008.
