Public Transport Statistics Bulletin GB: 2008 Edition Supplement
The Department for Transport has published provisional National Statistics on Local Authority provision of parking badges to disabled people and institutions in England in Public Transport Statistics Bulletin: 2008 Edition Supplement according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points are as follows:
- The number of parking badges ("blue badges") on issue to disabled people and institutions in England increased by 1 per cent to 2.33 million over the period 31 March 2007 to 31 March 2008.
- In 2008, there were 46 badges on issue per 1,000 people compared to 35 per 1,000 people ten years earlier.
- The number of badges on issue at the local authority's discretion remained unchanged over the twelve-month period to 31 March 2008 while the number of badges on issue to those in automatic categories increased by 3 per cent. At 31 March 2008, 62 per cent of blue badges were on issue at Local Authorities' discretion.
- The number of badges on issue to institutions such as elderly care homes fell by 7 per cent over the twelve-month period to 31 March. The proportion of all badges issued that are allocated to institutions has been declining gradually in the last ten years, from 1.5 per cent in 1998 to 1.1 per cent in 2008.
- The North West has more badges per head of population than any other region in England, with an average of 58 badges on issue per 1,000 people compared to a national average of 46 badges per 1,000 people. By contrast, London issues fewer badges per head than any other region, at 29 per 1,000 people.
Notes
The Supplement to the Public Transport Bulletin typically includes statistics on bus operators' revenue and costs derived from the Department's annual Public Service Vehicle (PSV) surveys. These statistics will be published in Spring 2009, following a methodological review of the imputation and estimation methods.
