This publication includes National Statistics on road casualties in Great Britain for the third quarter of 2007, which relate to casualties in accidents reported to the police.

The provisional estimates show the number of fatalities in road accidents were down by 5 per cent for the twelve months ending September 2007 compared to the previous twelve months. Total casualties were down 4 per cent, and killed and seriously injured casualties 2 per cent, compared with the previous 12 months.

Due to data supply difficulties the second quarter National Statistics bulletin on road accidents was not published as announced on Thursday 8 November. The missing data has now been received and estimates for the second quarter are included in Tables 3 and 8 of this bulletin. Further information on the second quarter estimates can be obtained from roadacc.stats@dft.gsi.gov.uk

Notes

1. These estimates are published to allow emerging trends to be monitored between the publications of annual figures. It should be noted that no single quarter's figures should be taken in isolation, especially if they appear to show a change in trend, as there are random fluctuations particularly in the smaller categories of road user.

2. Research conducted in the 1990s has shown that not all accidents are reported.  A note on this research has been included in the bulletin. The Department has published an article on the level of reporting in Road Casualties Great Britain: 2006 Annual Report, which can be found at the address below.

Figures for deaths refer to persons killed immediately or who died within 30 days of the accident.  This is the usual international definition, adopted by the Vienna Convention in 1968. Similar statistics of deaths on public roads, but compiled by date of registration, are published by the Registrars General.
