Criminal record checks - the requirement

The Department has introduced a requirement for a criminal record check for holders of permanent restricted zone (RZ) passes. The purpose of these checks is to increase security at UK airports, so hindering terrorist activity and discouraging links between airport employees and crime.

Currently a Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) is required for certain aviation security functions and this will continue to be the case. Those with a valid CTC clearance, or higher, are not required to undergo a separate criminal record check.

A variation to the single Direction to aerodrome managers (SDAM 1-02) was issued in June 2003 requiring that a criminal record check now be undertaken when making a RZ pass application.
