Exploring public attitudes to climate change and travel choices: deliberative research

This report presents the findings from an 18 month deliberative study that has explored public attitudes to climate change and how this relates to their personal travel choices. Specifically this research provides a greater insight into public understanding of climate change and how it relates to personal travel behaviours, explores the barriers and motivations for travel behaviour change, and considers the role of information in increasing public awareness and understanding of the issues.

It explores why people continue to use busy motorways instead of other travel modes; why people use motorways instead of other roads; the extent to which people see motorway congestion as a problem; how people cope with motorway congestion; and how people plan their motorway journeys.

Developing guidance and advice to address the social and distributional impacts of road pricing

In January 2006 the Department for Transport (DfT) commissioned the Centre for Transport Studies at the University of the West of England to undertake a rapid evidence assessment (REA) of the Social and Distributional Impacts of Road Pricing (report two). Findings from the REA were used to develop technical guidance for local authorities receiving TIF funding and who were considering the introduction of a local road pricing scheme. A summary of the technical guidance is provided in report one.
