Vehicle owners

The purpose of the MOT test is to ensure that cars, other light vehicles (including some light goods vehicles), private buses and motorcycles over a certain age are checked at least once a year to ensure that they comply with key roadworthiness and environmental requirements.

A test certificate relates only to the condition of testable items at the time of the test and should not be regarded as:

  • evidence of their condition at any other time
  • evidence of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle
  • evidence that the vehicle fully complies with all aspects of the law on vehicle construction and use

Full information about the MOT scheme, including details about why, when and where you can obtain the certificate is available from the MOT your car section on www.directgov.uk.

Further useful information related to owning or maintaining a car, such as buying or selling a vehicle, registering with the DVLA, car tax or obtaining Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), are available from the Car drivers section of www.directgov.uk.

Guidance for those who provide MOT tests, including information for those who wish to become an Authorised Examiners or Nominated Tester, is available from a dedicated section for MOT testers and garage owners on the Transport Office website.
