Inspector's report
2 Description of the Site and Its Surroundings
2.1 The roads proposed to be de-trunked are situated to the south and west of the Lake District National Park within Cumbria. They are most readily seen on Figure 1 of Mr Baldwin's Proof of Evidence (document HA3) and in more detail on document OBJ/36/9.
2.2 The M6 motorway runs north/south on the eastern side of the County. From the M6 there are two trunk roads which provide access to the western part of the County, namely the A66 and the A590.
2.3 The A66 runs westwards from junction 40 of the M6 in the northern part of the County, bypassing Keswick and Cockermouth before reaching its junction with the A595 to the east of Workington. From this junction, the trunk road becomes the A595 which runs south-westwards to Whitehaven from where it continues south, bypassing the town of Egremont, to Calder Bridge. The route then continues south, following the line of the coast to the village of Whicham near the town of Millom, from where it turns eastwards to join the A5092 at Grizebeck. The route then continues generally westwards as the A5092 to Greenodd where it joins the A590 trunk road.
2.4 The A590 trunk road runs west from junction 36 of the M6 to its junction with the A5092 at Greenodd before turning southwest to Ulverston and on to terminate at Barrow in Furness on the west coast on the north side of Morecambe Bay.
2.5 The sections proposed to be de-trunked are the A595 and A5092 from Calder Bridge to Greenodd. This part of the route is predominately single carriageway and is mostly rural in character, passing through a number of settlements along its length. Most of the area between this part of the route and the M6 is within the Lake District National Park and there are few, mostly minor, roads linking the coastal area to the eastern part of the County and the M6. The entire route proposed to be de-trunked lies within Cumbria. The section from Calder Bridge to Duddon Bridge lies within Copeland Borough; the section from Duddon Bridge lies within South Lakeland District. Duddon Bridge lies between Whicham and Grizebeck, and is shown on document OBJ/36/9.
