Bus priority: The way ahead
The Government has consistently made it clear that the bus has a crucial part to play in present and future transport policy. With car ownership continuing to grow traffic congestion will get worse. Initiatives to assist buses must be seen to be part of the traffic congestion solution. Introducing bus priority measures which minimise delays and improve the reliability of bus services are crucial to encouraging greater use of buses.
While many successful measures have been introduced around the country, often with funding from the Local Transport Plan allocations, we recognise that planning and implementing a programme of priorities for the bus is not a simple task. It is often the practical details that make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful scheme.
The Bus Partnership Forum has drawn together the experience gained by local authorities, passenger transport executives and bus operators from around the country and produced a resource pack. It provides sound realistic advice and examples of the things that can be done to make real improvements.
The pack can be viewed in html web page format or PDF format by clicking the links below. Copies of the pack can be ordered from the DfT free literature store (Tel: 0870 122 6236).
