St Ives Bay Line

4.5 miles long with superb views over Hayle estuary and Cornish coast. This short link from the Great Western Main Line also provides an important park and ride operation into the major resort of St Ives in season.

Objectives/actions

  • Half hourly service throughout summer to provide extra capacity for growth
  • Increased station capacity at St Ives to handle growth and enable quick turnround of trains
  • Car Park improvements at Lelant Saltings (park and ride) and other station improvements along the line
  • Simplified fares structure with discounts for Cornish Railcard holders
  • Simple ticket machines and other off line sales points
  • Feeder bus services from holiday accommodation to St Erth
  • Public art on the line in conjunction with Tate St Ives
  • Major promotion and marketing campaign
  • In the longer term, relocation of the park and ride to St Erth is proposed

Progress

These objectives have largely been delivered in time for the start of the summer timetable, and results will be monitored throughout the summer. Changes to the regulatory and contractual regime were successfully agreed in order to achieve this.

Designation:

The SRA Executive formally designated the line as one of the first Community Rail lines on 23rd June.

Strong support from local authorities for this pilot. A line group exists as part of Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership (DCRP).
