Grantham to Skegness
Grantham - Skegness line (Lincolnshire) 55.5 miles. Chosen to test elements of the strategy on a much longer route, with high seasonal variations in demand and freight.
Objectives/actions
- Development of longer distance as well as local traffic using the hub and spoke principles developed elsewhere in Lincolnshire through their 'InterConnect' initiative on the bus network
- Bus/rail integration
- Better main line connections
- Encouragement of leisure trips to attractions on the line by residents and holidaymakers in the coastal resorts
- Review of track and signalling requirements and the case for line speed improvements to use rolling stock more efficiently
- Review of scope for longer trains (possibly locomotive hauled) to meet high peak summer demand
- Formation of a Community Rail Partnership
- Development of station sites
- Development of freight traffic
Progress
A partnership has been established for the line. This partnership, which is being launched in June, has an active and dynamic partnership officer who is working hard to increase the profile of the line.
Plans for use of locomotive hauled trains have been proposed for the line during high summer. These can only progress if they make economic sense - i.e. they improve the viability of the line after considering any additional costs of carrying this type of traffic.
A client group including the train operator (Central Trains), the local authorities, the SRA and Network Rail has been meeting regularly to produce plans for the project on this the longest of the pilot lines.
