Britain's Transport Infrastructure: Rail Electrification (677 kb)
This document sets out the Government’s strategy on rail electrification. Work will begin immediately on the electrification of the Great Western Main Line between London, Reading, Oxford, Newbury, Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea, to be completed within eight years. In parallel, planning will begin immediately for the electrification of the line between Liverpool and Manchester, to be completed within four years.

Department for Transport guidance to Network Rail on phase 2 of the Manchester Hub Study (23 kb)
The Department for Transport has written to Network Rail in response to a request for guidance in respect of the phase 2 Manchester Hub study. This study follows Northern Way’s phase 1 study published in April 2009 which sets out Northern Way’s conditional outputs for the railway and quantifies the economic benefits to the North of England from investment in the railway in the Manchester area.

Rolling stock
The White Paper 'Delivering a Sustainable Railway', published in July 2007, stated that the Government would publish a rolling stock plan by January 2008, setting out in more detail how rolling stock would be used to deliver increased capacity.
