A technical accord has just been signed between the Autorite de Surete Nucleare (ASN) in France and the Department for Transport (DfT) in the United Kingdom, supporting the mutual recognition, starting from March 2006, of Approval Certificates for packages used for transporting radioactive material.

This agreement will bring the procedures between the two countries in this field closer, and will lead to greater collaboration between ASN and DfT. It will especially help the two authorities to share their technical skills by pooling knowledge and experience, and thus will enhance their understanding of the risks associated with this type of transport.

France and the United Kingdom apply the same regulations for the transport of radioactive materials and have similar industrial activities. Their high level of competence has been underlined by audits carried out by the IAEA, from which the two authorities have benefited, thereby reinforcing their mutual confidence.
