National origin-destination transport survey

Background

The National Origin-Destination Transport Survey Project has been developed by the Department to assist organisations involved in the identification, selection and use of appropriate origin-destination transport data. Collection of this type of data is often expensive. For this reason, whenever possible, transport modellers should ensure that they make the best use of existing survey data. However, it is often time-consuming identifying potential sources of movement data and can cause duplication of effort.

In recognition of the need for a consolidated source of information, the National Origin-Destination Transport Survey project was developed by the DfT in association with the Highways Agency.

The project originally began in 1997, and has undergone a number of changes since then. The National Origin-Destination Databank now contains information about transport origin-destination surveys for:

  • Roadside interviews
  • Public Transport
  • Home Interviews

The resultant database contains information collected from questionnaire returns sent to local authorities and consultants covering England, Scotland and Wales. The database contains information on the location and type of data available, including organisation central contact details.

Organisational details

The organisations have agreed to allow the Department to include their contact details, and the Department requests that all users of the data respect the intention and privilege associated with this information. If abused, the organisations may justly request that they be excluded from the database. This will be counter productive to the aim of reducing the effort in identifying relevant survey sites for transport modelling purposes.
