Project for the Sustainable Development of Heathrow
The Project for the Sustainable Development of Heathrow ('Project Heathrow' for short) has taken forward the commitment made in the Government's White Paper The Future of Air Transport to examine how to make best use of Heathrow's existing two runways, and how a third runway could be added after a new runway at Stansted, whilst complying with strict conditions on air quality, noise and improved public transport access.
The aims of the project were to reach a view about whether further development is likely to be consistent with the environmental conditions laid down in the White Paper. Its conclusions will not authorise or preclude development. If the conclusions are that development is possible without breaching the prescribed conditions, it would remain for the airport operator - BAA - to apply for planning permission.
NOTE: The work on Project Heathrow culminated in a public consultation exercise in November 2007 under the heading 'Adding Capacity at Heathrow Airport'. All furtherĀ updates will be posted under that section of the website.
