Airport charges - an introduction

The European Commission published a draft Directive on Airport Charges on 24 January 2007. The draft Directive proposes to set common principles to be respected by airport operators when they determine the charges to airlines for the use of airport services. The Commission has identified tension between airports and airlines over the acceptability and transparency of charges and would therefore like to introduce measures which allow for a level playing field to avoid cases of discontent and discrimination and  to improve transparency.

The Government will consult widely with stakeholders before preparing a strategy for negotiating the draft Directive at EU level. Key documents and consultation papers will be posted here as the negotiation process proceeds.

DfT met stakeholders from the aviation industry on 26 April to discuss the Directive. A copy of DfT's presentation is available below.
